I come from a pioneer family (Gilliam Wagon Train, 1844) and my grandfather (Prof. Alfred Lomax, 1892-1982) was a noted Oregon historian, so I guess my interest in history came naturally. I worked for several years in conservation, and joined the staff of the Oregon Historical Society in 1989 where I worked for 18-plus years as a jack of all trades (library assistant, exhibit sound producer, recorded sound conservator, microfilm technician, lead visitor services representative). I also worked as a professional musician for more than 40 years. My personal recorded sound collection runs to about 9,000 items in all formats. My studies and research focus on community oral histories, the relationship between film and history, public memory, community organizations, and making history accessible to the general public.

For nearly two years I have been conducting research and interviews about Portland's Center for the Moving Image (CMI), Andries Deinum, Tom Taylor, and the greater Portland film community. My Master's thesis is a cultural and community history about CMI as a foundational media arts center and about Portland's film community from 1957-1985 based on secondary and primary resources, including interviews with CMI students and/or instructors.
