Gus Frederick

Personal Statement:

I am a multimedia artist specializing in moving imagery and instructional
technology. I consider myself an amateur historian focusing on the heritage
and history of my community, the Silverton Country, as well as the history
of multimedia technology and its impact on society.

Areas of Specialization:

Digital motion picture production, editing and animation. I am skilled in
all aspects of digital and analog graphic art, moving imagery and audio
techniques. I am especially interested in acoustic audio recording
techniques, late 19th century political cartoons and early motion picture
hard and software. I am also well versed in analog to digital conversion of
various media, including but not limited to Optical Character Recognition
(OCR), phonographic audio restoration, photographic scanning, and film
transfer. I am a frequent lecturer on a variety of topics, from antique
phonographics to Martian lava tube caves.

Personal Statement:
I come from a pioneer family (Gilliam Wagon Train, 1844) and my grandfather (Prof. Alfred Lomax, 1892-1982) was a noted Oregon historian, so I guess my interest in history came naturally. I worked for several years in conservation, and joined the staff of the Oregon Historical Society in 1989 where I worked  for  18-plus years as a jack of all trades (library assistant, exhibit sound producer, recorded sound conservator, microfilm technician, lead visitor services representative). I also worked as a professional musician for more than 40 years. My personal recorded sound collection runs to about 9,000 items in all formats. Since 1979, I have been an independent scholar and historical consultant (mainly for law, engineering and business firms, including work as an expert witness). Before then, I was a college professor. I have written two corporate histories and other works. I am writing the history of The Oregonian. I serve as volunteer co-director of the Northwest History Network because it is an an opportunity and context for independent historians to support each other's work and to advocate for history.
